Inclusion
Ofsted reported in Slade Nursery School's last inspection that 'Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are catered for extremely well. The special educational needs coordinator works with families to support them gaining access to a variety of support such as speech and language therapy, paediatric advice and educational psychology support. Some children who require additional support benefit from highly skilled support assistants who understand their learning needs well.'
Home Hub
We have developed our 'Home Hub' by asking children what they think of when they think of home. We wanted to create a space where children (and families) would feel safe and calm and able to interact with staff while we support them with their Social and Emotional development. We have been trained by 'The Mulberry Bush' out reach team to deliver their curriculum. We aim to work with children and their siblings across the Wood Farm Federation in the Primary School.
For more information visit: Mulberry Bush Curriculum for Schools
This space will also be used to work with children and their families to support communication and language development. We will be using 'The Big Book of Ideas' linked to WellComm.
Sensory Experiences
We have created 2 sensory spaces to support children with self regulation. The first space is a relaxation and sensory room.
This space is designed to support children to learn techniques to de-escalate. It is our job to work out what each child needs in terms of support and then be able able to enhance their experience.
Lights: There are a number of different lights for children to try, including light up blocks and a light box.
Smells: There are several small bags with different smells available along with a smart sent diffuser.
Touch: We have a large number of resources which have different textures and weights. These are all designed with children in mind.
Sound: There is a smart speaker in the room but also a chair which plays music and vibrates.
Forest School
Children have had the opportunity to take part in Forest School in the nursery's outdoor learning area. Being outside and learning about nature and taking assessed risks help children's wellbeing and confidence. To see the curriculum and progression document for children using the 'Wild Forest' visit the curriculum section of the website Wild Forest.
